How to put Month Calendar Widget on your Home screen

Many Month Calendar Widget users download the app from Google Play and once it gets installed they get lost, because the app doesn't run immediately as a normal Android app does. Month Calendar Widget is a Home screen widget and doesn't run as normal Android apps do1. You have to put it on your Home screen to make it work.

Here are instructions to put the widget to use (you must know your device's Android version because there are some differences in the steps depending on it):

Versions up to Gingerbread (2.3.x)
1. Open the Home screen where you want to place the widget
2. Press Menu and touch Add, or just touch and hold and empty location on the Home screen
3. Choose Widgets in the menu
4. Find one of the two available sizes (3x2 or 4x3) in the widgets list
5. Adjust settings if you wish (press Back to exit)

Honeycomb versions (3.x)
1. Open the Home screen where you want to place the widget
2. Touch the + button at the top-right of the screen, or just touch and hold and empty location on the Home screen
3. Choose the Widgets tab
4. Find one of the two available sizes (3x2 or 4x3) in the widgets category
5. Drag the widget onto the Home screen where you want to add it
6. Adjust settings if you wish (press Back to exit)

Ice Cream Sandwich and later versions (4.x)
1. Open the Home screen where you want to place the widget
2. Touch the All apps icon
3. Choose the Widgets tab and swipe to the right to find one of the two available sizes (3x2 or 4x3)
4. Touch and hold the widget until the Home screen appears, slide it into place and lift your finger
5. Adjust settings if you wish (press Back to exit)

NOTE: If you use a Home screen replacement app such as Go Launcher or ADW Launcher, these steps may differ slightly.

1 Since version 1.3.0 the app runs normally after installed, but only to show brief instructions to help users, and also to overcome a quirk with Home screen widgets introduced with Honeycomb - they don't appear immediately in the list of installed widgets

  6. Dr. Farhan, Bob and franoti,

What you are seeing on your home screen is not the widget, rather a shortcut to the application. When the application starts, it shows its main screen as any Android app does. For Month Calendar Widget, the main screen is the one that shows the instructions. If you read carefully those instructions you will notice that the actual app you've just downloaded is installed but not ready for use. After following the steps (according to the device's Android version) the widget resides on the home screen and you never launch it, it just sits there and you use it from there.

These blog post has the instructions too, perhaps it would be easier to follow them in a browser in your computer with your device in hand.

I know this is somewhat confusing, but the Android platform has its usability issues with home screen widgets installation and use, as I explain better in http://mobiledevjourney.blogspot.com/2013/03/answering-comments-about-month-calendar.html.

I'm thinking of a better way to make the process smoother for all users.

    Cheers,

    José

  7. Can the "today" digit(s) be made dark and their background be made lighter to provide more contrast? How about changing refillDatesGrid line 95, from R.color.today to R.color.lightgray. Then add a new ssb.setSpan(setTextColor(cont.getResources().getColor(R.color.today)),1,5 Spannable.SPAN_EXCLUSIVE_EXCLUSIVE). Thanks, ckfelber@gmail.com

    1. Hi Rick, I don't understand what you're talking about "get it to pop up so you can see the days".
Maybe it's some kind of appointment reminder?

  12. Hi had this on my galaxy s2 just fine and loved it but went to the new HTC one and after I lift my finger to place the widget on the screen it jumps to the settings and when I hit back or home to go back to the home page the widget is gone I cannot get it to stay on the home screen

    1. Hi Matthew,

For now the only way to exit Settings and get the widget installed is to press Back. Pressing Home won't get the widget on the Home screen, that's by design in Android.

But you're saying hitting Back also won't work... Maybe you're missing some message such as "There is no enough space in the Home screen for this widget"?

    1. Hi Candy, not for now, as is explained in the app description in Play.

You will be able to do things like that with the upcoming Calendar Events extension.

  16. It ll be so good if the dev would consider adding transparency options on the widget.
    Anyways.. Great widget.

  17. Hi, that feature is planned for version 1.6.0.
Now very busy with the version that will allow more extensions and the second extension, MCW Calendar Events.
    Thanks for your feedback

  18. It would be amazing if I could tap any of the days to add my own events. If thats what you are talking about with 1.6.0., I will be wxcited to wait for ot.

    1. Hi Ryan, the ability to manage your events will come in the second extension to the widget. It will be a separate app that should enhance the basic widget.
Version 1.6.0 is the planned version that will bring more customization to MCW, like transparency and color adjusting.
      Thanks for your feedback
